Cryostats: OptiCool, Montana, Attocube & Dilution Refrigerator

← Instruments

A working index of the cryogenic measurement environments in my notes, with emphasis on what to record and how to connect instrument logs to transport, optical, and microwave data. Exact operating sequences and limits belong to the manual and approved procedure for the installed system.

OptiCool: optical and electrical acquisition

My OptiCool workflows include reflection contrast, polarization-dependent optical spectra, photoluminescence, and electrical transport. Typical analysis inputs are spectral text files and DAQ waveforms acquired while sweeping gates, magnetic field, or an excitation parameter.

  • Save the measured wavelength calibration and gate/field axes with each scan. Distinguish a setpoint from the stabilized reading.
  • For reflection measurements, record the reference spectrum, acquisition settings, polarization configuration, and normalization convention.
  • For an APD/DAQ waveform, record sample rate, trigger or phase reference, excitation frequency, and the actual time segment used in analysis.
  • When folding repeated waveform segments, document whether alternate segments are reversed to place both sweep directions on the same coordinate axis. Preserve the original sequence as well.

Montana: transport data and scaling

The Montana-related analysis notes include two-column X.txt transport data loaded with NumPy. A conversion factor used in one dataset was 10⁻⁵; that number must be interpreted from the acquisition configuration before being reused. Voltage, current, amplifier gain, and software scaling should be recorded separately.

Check whether the first line is a header or a valid data point before using skiprows or deleting a row. Inspect a raw line and the array shape first. The existing notes do not establish a complete operating procedure or the installed model’s performance limits.

Attocube: spectroscopy maps and indexing

The Attocube-associated datasets discussed here include absorption/reflectance text arrays. An important part of the MATLAB-to-Python conversion is preserving row indexing and axis orientation. For example, MATLAB rows 201:307:end correspond to Python data[200::307, :].

For an image map, specify the wavelength axis, sweep axis, origin, and color limits explicitly. “Attocube” can identify different subsystems; a dataset label alone is not enough to infer a cryostat, nanopositioner, or controller model. Record the installed components with the measurement configuration.

VTI

The existing VTI article remains the dedicated record for this instrument: VTI notes. When comparing VTI and other temperature sweeps, retain sweep direction, stabilization time, sensor location, sample mounting, and measurement power.

Dilution refrigerator: logs and sample temperature

Recent work uses a Bluefors dilution refrigerator for low-temperature microwave and transport measurements. For every sweep, preserve thermometer readings, heater settings, instrument timestamps, and the sequence of warming and cooling. The temperature reported by a refrigerator sensor need not equal the electron temperature of a poorly thermalized device.

  • Record which sensor supplies the plotted temperature and where the sample is mounted.
  • Use matched timestamps to combine VNA or lock-in data with the refrigerator log. Determine time offsets from the actual run, including clock and time-zone differences.
  • A resonance that broadens or disappears with warming is an observation. It does not, by itself, locate a superconducting transition or identify the participating material.
  • Repeat selected traces after returning to base temperature to check reversibility, and retain power dependence as a separate axis.

Pressure excursions: what the record can establish

Pressure spikes and elevated vacuum readings were among the troubleshooting questions in my notes. A pressure trace or temperature trace alone generally does not uniquely separate a leak, outgassing, gauge effects, or changing pumping conditions. Keep the gauge identity, unit, location, pump state, valve state, and temperature history together before comparing events.

Valve labels such as V13 and gauge labels such as P1 or P5 are specific to the installed plumbing diagram. A number copied from another run is not a universal pressure target or a mixture-inventory measurement. This page intentionally contains no inferred valve sequence: condensation, warm-up, mixture recovery, and restarting circulation require the system’s approved operating procedure.

A common run record

  • Run identifier and date; sample mount and wiring configuration.
  • Sensor name, temperature unit, and measured versus requested temperature.
  • Source power/current, attenuation or series resistance, detector gain, and integration time.
  • Stabilization criterion, sweep direction, actual timestamps, and interruptions.
  • Raw files, configuration snapshot, processing version, and diagnostic plots.
